Kidnap group leader killed in firefight

AN ALLEGED leader of a kidnap group tied with the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) was killed in a law enforcement operation in Zamboanga Sibugay, the police reported Monday, June 8.

Lieutenant Colonel Cyrus Belarmino, chief of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) in Zamboanga Sibugay, identified the slain kidnap group leader as Mamay Aburi, who was killed in a firefight at 7:35 a.m. Monday, June 8.

Belarmino said the firefight ensued when the suspect, armed with a caliber .45 pistol, resisted the lawmen who were serving a warrant for his arrest along the highway of Naga, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The law enforcement operation was launched by a joint team of policemen, soldiers and intelligence operatives.

Belarmino said Aburi fled as the exchange of gunfire continued and was cornered and killed in Poblacion Muslim village, Titay, Zamboanga Sibugay.

He said Aburi has standing warrants of arrest for violation of Presidential Decree 1866 as amended by Republic Act 8294 and for the crime of robbery issued by the courts in the towns of Ipil and Imelda, Zamboanga Sibugay, respectively.

He said Aburi, who belongs to the Abral Abdusalam crime group operating in Zamboanga Sibugay, has ties with the Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf bandits. (SunStar Zamboanga)
