DENR celebrates 'Eagle Week' amid Covid-19

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO -- The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is calling on stakeholders to take time, amid ongoing quarantine efforts, to remember the importance of the Philippine Eagle in the country's eco-system as the nation celebrates the Philippine Eagle Week.

Presidential Proclamation 79 of 1999 declared June 4 to 10 as Philippine Eagle Week (PEW) to strengthen awareness on the significant role of Philippine Eagle in the forest ecosystem, and its importance as a national symbol and unique heritage.

This year's theme "Pangangalaga ng buhay-ilang at kagubatan, kalusugan ng mamamayan" highlights the significance of conserving wildlife and their habitats to manage the risk of emerging infectious diseases like Covid-19.

In Central Luzon, the Sierra Madre mountain ranges in the boundary between Aurora and Nueva Ecija are home to "Agawid" a Philippine Eagle, who was rescued in Aurora Memorial National Park in June 2016. Agawid was released back to the wild in October 2017 after 17 months of captivity.
