Hydro firm pays fine for Clean Water Act violation

A HYDRO power company paid P200,000 to the Pollution Adjudication Board.

Hedcor Sabangan Inc. said it abided by the decision of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Pollution Adjudication Board (DENR-PAB) for supposed violations of the Clean Water Act during the construction of the Sabangan hydropower plant.

The payment was made due to a water pollution control and abatement case which involved an alleged unauthorized dumping of soil to the Chico River.

Sabangan Hydro was constructed in 2013 and started operating in 2015.

In an official statement, Hedcor Sabangan Inc. said during the construction of all hydropower facilities of Sabangan Hydro from 2013 to 2015, it was necessary to build a temporary cofferdam to be able to construct the weir.

It added that it made that the construction of the cofferdam was compliant with globally accepted methods and proven engineering practices.

Hedcor Sabangan Inc. is the project company for the run-of-river hydroelectric power plant located in Sabangan, Mt. Province.

Hedcor has hydropower plants in, La Trinidad, Itogon, Tuba, Bakun, and Sablan, Sabangan in Mountain Province, and Amilongan, Ilocos Sur.
