THE Department of Health (DOH) on Wednesday reported an additional 452 fresh cases of coronavirus infection, the highest in 12 days.

The agency also listed 288 late cases, bringing the total new confirmed cases in the last 24 hours to 740, the fourth highest since May 29, when the agency first modified its case bulletins to reflect the fresh and late cases.

This caused the total case count in the country to surge to 23,732 as of 4 p.m., June 10.

Mortalities also increased by 10, after five days of single-digit numbers, raising the death toll in the country from the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) to 1,027.

An additional 159 patients recovered, increasing the total recoveries to 4,895.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said 91 of the 452 fresh cases are from the National Capital Region (NCR), 83 from Central Visayas, 277 from other regions and 1 repatriate.

The fresh cases, or the test results released in the last three days, were based on the daily accomplishment reports submitted by 47 out of 54 operational testing laboratories.

The late cases, or those released at least four days ago, included 100 from NCR, 1 from Central Visayas, 142 from other regions and 45 repatriates.

As of June 9, the World Health Organization said 404,396 had died from Covid-19 while more than 7 million have been infected with the novel coronavirus, or Sars-CoV-2. (Marites Villamor-Ilano/SunStar Philippines)
