THE Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) officially announced the start of rainy season in the country on Friday, June 12, 2020.
Pagasa said the occurence of thunderstorms, Tropical Depression Butchoy, and the southwest monsoon (habagat) during the last five days have brought significant amount of rains over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas.
"Yes start na ting ulan. Criteria satisfied: for five-day period (of) rain, more than 25-millimeter amount of rainfall (has been) experienced at type 1 climate areas in the Phil (field stations of Pagasa at west portion of the country and the existence of westerly component prevailing wind," said Engineer Al Quiblat, Pagasa-Mactan chief.
However, such rain events may be followed by dry periods (monsoon breaks) that could last for several days to two weeks.
Pagasa Mactan said high heat index could be felt during the monsoon breaks.
Jhomer Eclarino, Pagasa Mactan weather specialist, said the heat index from June last year ranged from 37 to 44 degrees Celcius.
"And this June 2020 so far, ang pinakataas na heat index is 41 degrees Celcius katong June 3," he said.
Pagasa said it will continue to closely monitor the situation and updates or advisories will be issued as appropriate.
The public and all concerned agencies are advised to take precautionary measures against the impact of rainy season. (WBS)
