Solon: Exercising prudence

EXERCISE is a necessity. But with the current situation, we should always do it with prudence and necessary precautions. I came across an article the other day wherein gym facilities had a risk factor of 8, 9 being the riskiest. In comparison, getting groceries has a risk level of 3. Exercise professionals have a responsibility and a duty to our clients and stakeholders to help people understand the risks that may be associated with exercise in an indoor space.

During 24 days in South Korea, 112 persons infected with Covid-19 have been traced back to fitness classes at 12 sports facilities. It is touted that physical exercise indoor facilities could increase infection rates and thus should be minimized.

How can we exercise safely then?

1. Stay outdoors. Studies show that droplets can stay in aerosol form for three hours at most. Outdoor exercise, as long as social distancing of 15 feet per person is observed, can be performed.

2. Do not touch the ground. Droplets are heavy and may fall to the ground where the virus can stay up to four hours to at most 50 hours depending on the surface. To be safe, minimize placing your hands on the ground if you’re not in the safety of your own home.

3. Some sports can now be performed. Cycling, running, tennis, golf and similar sports are safe to perform during this time. It is important to stay active, but also exercise safety when performing these.

4. Beware of public restrooms. In the Australian framework, parks are open and people are advised to observe social distancing protocols. However, canteens and restrooms are still closed to the public.

5. Do not share equipment. As much as possible, it may not be wise to share fitness equipment at this time. Within your home, one can have stability balls and kettlebells. This type of equipment can allow us to do a hundred different exercises as long as we are creative.

For our senior citizens, light exercises may be done in the comfort of your own home. It is also recommended that we get our daily dose of sunlight to keep our Vitamin D levels up and maintain immunity. In these times, while we cannot exercise the way we used to. Some exercise is better than none at all.

Truly in these times, health is wealth.
