Unity prayer held amid pandemic

HIGH-RANKING officials from different sects and religions in Davao City joined forces in a solidarity prayer on Friday evening, June 12, calling for unity, harmony and healing amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

The Archdiocese of Davao initiated the "Prayer for Unity, Harmony and Solidarity, for God’s Mercy and Healing, and for an end of Covid-19 pandemic", aired on its official radio station, DXGN 89.9 Spirit FM.

The solidarity prayer was led by officials from the government, business, security, medical and religious sector.

Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio was the first to lead the solidarity prayer, wherein she urged Dabawenyos to "come together as one community" to pray for mercy and health, and an end of the Covid-19 in the Philippines, and the entire world.

"The work of human hands alone cannot deliver us from this pandemic for it is only when all our efforts are imbued with God's grace and blessing, that we will be able to see the end to Covid-19," Duterte-Carpio said in her prayer.

Davao City Police Office (DCPO) Director Police Colonel Kirby John Kraft, who represented the security sector, urged for the continuous unity in the country which is currently struggling to bring about the hardship with the effects of the virus.

Kraft also urged everyone to continuously pray for the national and local leaders and forces who are currently responding to the pandemic situation in the country.

Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) President John Tria, meanwhile, prayed for the recovery of the entire country, which had some establishments closed due to the restrictions set to mitigate the further spread of the virus.

"We ask you to help our economy recover to give us the safe, healthy, enabling environment for even the smallest and simplest businesses to grow and flourish," Tria said.

He also prayed for the micro and small enterprises in the rural areas to be given opportunities to grow and help create job opportunities for the poor, those returning overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), and those who were terminated.

Tria also added in his prayer the protection of the health and jobs of workers, especially those who recently returned to work following the lifting of some restrictions in some offices and establishments.

Ricardo Audan, Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC) chief of clinics and health emergency and current acting head, prayed for the medical forces especially the doctors, nurses, and health workers who are at the frontline in battling against the dreadful virus.

"We place in your care all our doctors, nurses, and health care workers working in the intensive care units, emergency rooms and in the isolation room as more people are getting sick, health workers and fronliners are working longer hours and is at high risk in contracting the virus," Audan said.

He also prayed for the recovery of those who contracted Covid-19 and those suffering from other diseases.

Aside from the Catholic Church, religious leaders in Islam, Lumad and the United Church Of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP) participated and offered their prayer for the immediate end of the Covid-19.

According to the June 12 advisory of the Department of Health (DOH), the Philippines has a total of 24,787 confirmed Covid-19 cases, including 5,454 recoveries and 1,502 died.

Meanwhile, Davao Region has now 417 cases, with 254 recoveries and 31 deaths.

Davao City remains to have the highest number of Covid-19 cases with 347, 213 already recovered and 26 died.
