BFP-Western Visayas under fire for 'economic sabotage'

MALAY Acting Mayor Floribar Bautista said he is planning to file a complaint before the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases against the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Western Visayas Regional Office for "breach of protocol."

Reports said that a female firefighter from Iloilo was declared coronavirus-positive while in Boracay Island. She underwent a swab test days before she joined the BFP team in Boracay for a seminar.

"The BFP from Iloilo seems to have organized a gathering in Boracay without proper coordination. If this is true, this can be considered an economic sabotage because tourists may turn off of going to Boracay after learning that Covid-19 patient came here," Bautista said.

Bautista said in a press conference Tuesday, June 16, that he already called for the local inter-agency task force to probe the incident.

The local government of Malay is currently tracing those who may have had contact with the female firefighter.

Earlier, Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Trenas also called on the BFP to explain the incident after learning that the BFP Regional Office has a Covid-19 patient.

He ordered the said office to be closed temporarily.

The BFP-Western Visayas is yet to provide explanation on the incident. (SunStar Philippines)
