THE Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Davao told communities in lockdown areas to only use light materials in setting up their barricades to not hamper fire trucks from accessing streets during fire response.

BFP-Davao Chief Operations Officer Senior Inspector Israel Johann Alagaban said in a virtual presser on June 24, that their BFP-Davao Regional Director Fire Senior Superintendent Fred Trajeras Jr. had already coordinated with the district fire marshal to visit barangays that barricaded the entrance and exit of their area.

“Dili man gyud ni dapat and dili pod nato sila ma-blame tungod kay mao man gud na ilang perception, sa ilang level, mao na ang pasabot sa lockdown (it is not right and we cannot blame the communities because it may be their definition of lockdown),” Alagaban said.

When Davao Region was placed under the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), several barangays put up barricades to limit the entry of vehicles as well as people who are not residents in their areas. This is one of the preventive measures to avoid the spread of coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

“Ang negative effect ana, kon ilaha gyud nang butangan ug barricade, kon naa may sunog, maglisod gyud ang Bureau of Fire (If a fire breaks out and there is a barricade on the streets, BFP personnel will have difficulty to respond),” Alagaban said.

He added they coordinated with the barangays and removed heavy barricades and these were replaced with light materials to give easy access to fire trucks.

As families observe home quarantine, he said fire safety should not be neglected in the community.

In the past months, that BFP responded to fire incidents. Alagaban said that it was a huge challenge on their part considering the threat of Covid-19.
