“FITTER better be sooner.” This is the advice we give people who may undergo medical procedures such as surgery. A healthy body has the capacity to recover faster from any medical procedure or disease. In recent months because of Covid-19, this advice is now being given to the general public in other nations.

While being indoors exposes one to the risk of aerosols, outdoor exercise is deemed generally safe, especially in wide and open spaces. Experts have found that less fit people with existing medical conditions were five times more likely to have a worse outcome from Covid-19. Smokers are also three times more likely to have this result. Some governments are urging smokers that this is a very good time to quit smoking.

How else can we improve our health during this time?

1. Quit smoking. The threat of the virus plus the threat of other diseases from tobacco makes it a wise decision to quit smoking.

2. Exercise unless you are not feeling well. Ideally dance, brisk walk—even household chores may help. Strengthening and balancing exercises are recommended. Some forms of flexibility exercises like yoga can ease stress. Try doing different forms of exercise that you can do at home and see what you like.

3. Those over 60 are considered to be at higher risk from the virus. They can enjoy exercise with morning sunlight inside their homes. Vitamin D is good for the immune system and protects us from different forms of diseases.

4. Maintain a good nutrition plan by including more fruits, vegetables and lean protein. Minimize the consumption of processed food and sugar as these have the potential to cause inflammation in the body.

5. Maintain and improve your mental health by including meditation, breathing and gratefulness into your daily routine, and getting a good night’s sleep.

6. Have alcohol-free days. Alcohol burdens our liver and stresses some internal organs.

As we live in this time of the new normal, one of the most responsible things we can do for our city is to stay healthy. Our capable doctors and nurses are dealing with Covid-19 patients who require their full attention. Let’s try not to add to the challenges of our healthcare sector. Stay safe and stay healthy!
