Estremera: LFOT*: The Antolihao and the Pirok-pirok

Spiders Web

THIS Covid quarantine made me "pasyal-pasyal in the house" as President Duterte suggested us to do at the very start and discovered a place I haven't really appreciated. The upstairs living/dining area.

I've been using it since moving in last September, but only to eat at night, the focus being on the food, the cellphone or a book, the electric fan turned on, windows left closed.

Quarantine saw me sitting there for hours, windows open, the breeze allowed to waft in. The first discovery, it allows the afternoon breeze in, it felt like you were in the veranda of a house in the farm. Second, one antolihao (Black-naped oriole) loves dropping by to eat the ripe fruits of a neighbor's palm tree, and there is this pirok-pirok (Yellow-center bulbul).

The antolihao would give out a loud squawk as it takes one palm fruit, and soon after, the pirok-pirok will arrive to chase the antolihao away. I hated that bully pirok-pirok!

On the third month of quarantine, however, and having seen the two birds from my seat on the living/dining area and from below at the front yard or the street, I realized I was darn wrong. The pirok-pirok is not a bully! It's the antolihao's playmate.

The antolihao would give out that loud squawk to call the pirok-pirok, eat a fruit or two and play a game of chase once the pirok-pirok arrives.

How often have we made the wrong conclusions just based on what we have first seen or heard. Just like the dynamics between the antolihao and the pirok-pirok. How often do we judge based on looks? The pirok-pirok being drab brown with a black mask is automatically the villain, the bully, as against the pretty red-beaked bright yellow and black antolihao. Sad but true.

*LFOT means Lessons From Ordinary Things, a series of articles I started on my musings during the Covid-19 quarantines.
