APALIT -- At least 48 individuals were arrested by local authorities here for a violation of the existing liquor ban during the first day of the fiesta celebration of this town.

As part of the security protocols implemented during the three-day fiesta celebration from June 28 to 30, Mayor Oscar Tetangco, Jr. ordered the ban on sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages from June 26 to July 1.

Due to the influx of complaints on the violation of the said order, Tetangco said he instructed the local police headed by Lieutenant Colonel Elmer Decena on Sunday afternoon to roam around and immediately arrest offenders.

During the said operation, 23 individuals from Barangay Tabuyoc, 13 from San Vicente, 10 from Sucad, and two from San Juan were rounded up by police.

"I have received reports that many are violating the liquor ban. They've sent me photos of people gathering together and even drinking from one glass, unmindful of the threat of Covid-19 so I immediately told our local police to arrest all violators," Tetangco said.

He stressed that the liquor ban is not intended to spoil the already-curtailed celebration, but is aimed at protecting the community from the deadly virus.

He said the local government intends to keep the municipality free from the virus as it currently has no active Covid-19 case.

The mayor asked his constituents to be cooperative with the safety protocols being implemented to safeguard themselves and their families from the disease.

"We can celebrate our fiesta without risking our and our families' health. The virus is still around so we have to be extra careful," he said.
