Lawmaker backs new teaching methods for colleges

WITH the opening of classes for the tertiary educational institutions scheduled on September 1, 2020, students will now be given a different education system through new learning methods.

Baguio City Representative Marquez Go, who chairs the Committee on Higher Education, said aside from a face-to-face learning system, students in the tertiary level will have to be ready for flexible learning methods or various systems of learning to be applied by higher learning institutions depending on the situation in their area.

"For the tertiary level, they should start the face-to-face classes before September 1 through blended learning modality in the conduct of their classes. They may allow a face-to-face learning depending on the situation and the protocols that have to be implemented in schools because there may be schools in other places in the country that may not have a Covid-19 case and they have a limited number of students per class which may allow them for a face to face system of learning maybe once or twice a week," Go said.

The lawmaker stated the remaining days of the week would be given to the students to work on homeworks.

For the primary and secondary education, Go cited the number of students per classroom in the public schools as a primary concern as to why the government decided to employ blended and flexible learning system for students.

"On basic education, the President has given an announcement that no vaccine, no face to face classes because this is the primary concern for public schools considering the number of students per classrooms which reaches from 40 to 50," Go said.

The lawmaker added that facilities in the public schools are limited in terms of putting up health protocols.

"I think this is being worked on by the Department of Education at the moment and let us wait for the announcement on how they will proceed particularly for elementary and the high school level," Go said.
