Solon: Making a ‘habit chain’

THERE is always something to improve on our health. It can be eating more fruits and vegetables, getting more movement in, having a moment for gratitude, meditating, or even doing some stretching! Getting healthy is about sticking with a good habit consistently. This quarantine period, our household has been able to stay active for at least six days a week. This in the form of calisthenics, some drills, walking within the compound and flexibility work. These habits took us time to develop, but now, the day just feels incomplete if we weren’t able to do any of these activities.

What is a habit chain? Comedian Jerry Seinfeld popularized this. A habit chain is when you get a calendar and commit yourself to doing something. Each time you perform that habit, you mark the day in the calendar. Sooner or later you will see yourself successfully marking more days in the calendar and you would start thinking how big of a waste it might be to skip one day so as not to “break the chain.”

The habit I’m working on now is to meditate and read each morning and make sure that I do not immediately reach for any gadget. The last few weeks, we are so enamored by the news, and the first thing we used to do is check our gadgets to see if there are any significant developments in our city. By doing this, I used to start the day anxious and stressed over something I could not possibly control! With this new strategy, we start the day more mindful, grateful and counting each day’s blessings.

What is a healthy habit you need to work on? Try including this in a habit chain and see your health change for the better.
