Samante: The challenges of sports writing in time of Covid

IT HAS been four months since Covid-19 interrupted our lives.

The year 2020 held such promise, yet, six months have passed and we seem lost in the point of no return.

ECQ, GCQ, and MGCQ never meant any difference. Covid-19 is still present even with all the quarantine names, guidelines, and measures we have instituted. As of this writing, we have 44,000++ confirmed cases in the country, 600++ of which are in the Davao Region.

In those four months, sports scribes such as myself found weekly writing quite a challenge. There were no live sports events to cover or draw something from, no highlights of local sports happenings. We have missed a lot of sports events, both locally and internationally. What made it more challenging was the inability to host face to face fora for sports. Before Covid-19, we had the weekly DSA Forum. While online forums are the way to go, we also missed interacting with sports personalities and fellow sports scribes, face to face. We were never prepared.

Writing this weekly sports column in this time of Covid-19 has been very challenging. Every time my deadline comes, I would scour the internet and get exciting sports news for inspiration. The first two months were comfortable; the last two months were not. Even with some sports events set to resume in a couple of weeks, there are still not many sports events for me to write.

It is what Covid-19 has brought upon us: creativity and sustaining our passion for writing. The last four months have seen all my creativity exhausted in coming up with a submission for this weekly column. It has helped me make room for creativity in dealing with work pressures. This column is my way of giving back to the community during this time of pandemic when sports events are absent. We are here to continue bridging the gap.

It was a challenging four months, and we, sports scribes, are somewhat relieved that the NBA is set to return. IATF has allowed professional athletes to resume training and many more developments in sports we can continue writing.

We can all look forward to what unfolds in the next couple of months. Incidentally, we still have six months of 2020 to bear before Christmas and New Year come.

Hoping that by then, we can be ready!
