LAST February 14, 2020, Mojo Nova released its first single “Rise (Beautiful)” under their own label Mojo Records. The song easily picked up among listeners with the soulful voice of Joanne Bernal their vocalist.

The release was one to remember especially in the local music scene as Mojo Nova band shared it's first original music for the world to enjoy.

Now, we are in for another treat as the band teases us yet again with another epic release of its second single "Aliw."

As the quarantine made it hard for the group to grace this writer with a face-to-face interview, I instead sent them questions over messenger for us to take a peek on the thoughts of this amazingly talented group who is setting anew the local music scene on fire with their new Tagalog single.

What's the story behind "Aliw"?

Our guitarist, Hans, created this song for the sake of creating one. The main intention was to put together Filipino poetry and soul/funk music as a creative exploration.

To whom would you like to share this song?

To everyone, especially our fellow Filipinos who love listening to music and are looking for something new and fresh when it comes to OPM (original Pinoy music).

Does "Aliw" make listeners relive certain feelings or does it move one to action?

Since different listeners have different experiences, we wanted the song to be versatile when it comes to how listeners perceive it. Some may see it as a love song, some may see it as a song about longing, while some may see it as a song about escaping reality and getting lost in one’s fantasies. However listeners interpret the song is subjective and we are happy to let them express themselves through it.

How long have you been journeying as a band and how is it so far?

We only started sharing our original music with the world this year and so far it has been a great learning experience. We are learning how to better ourselves musically and creatively as one unit and as growing young individuals. We’ve come to explore different styles of music and put them together to develop our style and create our identity as a musical group.

Do you have regrets?

Our one regret as a band is that we took too long before sharing our music to the world. It took us more than two years together before we started working on this because we were focused on honing our craft and finding our musical identity.

What are your hopes and dreams as a group?

We hope to be known as part of the indie music scene not just in our city but throughout the whole country and even the whole world. We want to be an integral part of the industry and get the chance to work with the people we look up to.

We are becoming more present and active online so we can connect more to our listeners. Our listeners mean a lot to us and we want to give them only the best we can give. We plan to keep this up by making more songs and content so that we always have something to give to them.

What can be said about the music you produce as a band?

We find beauty in the cooperation and collaboration within the group because each one of us has something to offer. We all have different tastes in music, but we are all going in the same musical direction as a group. We make sure that the music we produce is of great quality and is at its finest before we share it. We have certain standards and we make sure we meet them no matter what.

How did the pandemic affect your band?

Each of us has different ways of coping with the situation brought about by this pandemic. With the lack of live shows, we were able to rest and this inspired us to work on our musical weaknesses and be more confident with our ideas and creativity. We adapted by taking advantage of what we already have—the internet, computers and musical equipment. We started developing different skills such as recording music and creating various content in the comfort of our own homes.

What should listeners expect from your songs?

Listeners can expect the unexpected. Since we have more than one songwriter in the band, the songs we make are very different from each other, but together they form what we like to call the “Mojo Nova sound." We want every release to be unpredictable.

Listeners can listen to us on different digital platforms such as Spotify, Youtube, Apple Music and more. They can visit us on our website www.mojonovamusic.com to learn more. For now, we post weekly covers and monthly live sessions on our Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram pages.

There goes our favorite local band. Don't forget to check out their new single "Aliw" at the different digital platforms.

Indeed, nothing beats OPM.
