THE Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital (CDUH) and the University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMed) both expanded their Covid-19 bed capacity to cater to the rising cases of the coronavirus disease in Cebu.

CDUH on Monday, July 13, 2020, held a blessing ceremony for the additional 52 beds, which raised the CebuDoc Group of Hospitals’ Covid-19 bed capacity to 204.

“We can be very proud of Ward C because we are answering the call. We are also preparing for a possible second or third surge of cases once the enhanced community quarantine will be lifted in the next weeks,” said Dr. Potenciano Larrazabal III, president and chairman of the board of CebuDoc.

The Covid ward is equipped with negative pressure airflow, Hepa-filter and UV sterilization.

Larrazabal said patients who have Philhealth coverage would not spend a single centavo.

He thanked the Department of Health for helping them hire more doctors, nurses and other medical frontliners to help in the fight against Covid-19.

He said they recently had to transfer some of their staff nurses from sister hospitals to join their CebuDoc team.

“We are also aggressively recruiting doctor consultants to increase our physician capacity in our Covid-19 areas. With the help of the DOH, which already deployed additional nurses to our hospitals, we continue finding ways to increase our work force,” CebuDoc said in an earlier statement.

Larrazabal said they are working on expanding the bed capacity of their sister hospitals so they can refer patients there in case the CDUH is full.

He said they are also purchasing additional ventilators so they can take care of more critical patients.

UCMed, which started with 10 beds devoted to Covid-19 patients last March, now has 91 beds. (JOB)
