Samante: The Bubble

Samante: The Bubble

WITH the NBA looking to restart the season by month's end, the buzz word has been "bubble."

What is a bubble? It is a common plaything among children, especially during bath time. In today's reality, the bubble symbolizes hope for the resumption of sports events.

After the NBA, there have been talks for our Olympic athletes to have their own training "bubbles" in preparation for the Olympic games. The PBA is also considering their own "bubble" for its season.

Who would have thought that sports will be confined in a bubble? Never in my wildest imagination have I anticipated sports events in such a predicament. We also never imagined Covid-19 to happen. We were so secure with a reality sans Covid that when it happened, we had to be creative enough to come with these innovations such as the bubble.

In the NBA bubble, there are still limitations in movement and things that the players can do. It is not absolute freedom to do as one pleases while in the bubble. Even media people covering the event have to abide by the league's guidelines and policies to cover the remainder of the NBA season.

As we eagerly anticipate the resumption of the NBA season in the bubble, we also look into our bubbles. Each of us affected by the pandemic are living in a bubble. We see things happening from within our bubbles. Some bubbles may not be as grand as what others may have. Luxury and amenities may not be the same for everyone. What is common in this experience is we are all living in the relative safety of the bubble.

The NBA players in the bubble are enjoying the amenities of Disney World. Probably the perks of being professional athletes. We may envy them for being able to enjoy the best of both worlds. Playing the game that they love, getting paid for it, and enjoying the luxuries of Disney World. Perhaps we can think of it as "the Life."

But the reality is, they are away from their families. They are subject to stricter quarantine and health protocols, and they have to keep healthy to be able to finish the season.

It is essentially the same for every one of us outside Disney World.

The bubble is just a glorified community quarantine for them.
