BROTHERS Jasper Von and Jegger Denzel Villaceran, Grade 11 and 9, respectively, students of Tiglawigan National High School in Cadiz City, always excel academically.

The two Eagle Scouts reap various awards and merits.

Benzan Chavez, another grade 11 student of the same school, also enjoys similar accolades.

What do Jasper Von, Jegger Denzel and Benzan have in common?

Maricris Villaceran, mother of Jasper Von and Jegger Denzel, is the president of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA). As president, she actively participates in every school activities.

Like Maricris, Elizandra Chavez, a mother of Benzan, always attends and cooperates in the PTA meeting, and volunteers during a school-based feeding program and various programs.

Maricris and Elizandra who support every school activities have become inseparable partners of the school.

Their children's achievement manifests the vital significance of parents-school/teachers-students relationship.

The parents active involvement in school activities contributed to their children's academic performance and socio-emotional development. Their parents leadership in school motivated the learners to study hard and soar high in excellence.

The study, Parental Involvement In School Activities In Relation to Learners Academic Performance, shows that parents participation appears to be declining.

The study has three areas of concentration. These are Communicating, Volunteering and Learning at Home.

Based on study conducted among the 236 parent respondents for school year 2019-2020, the Communication Area obtains a great extent; Volunteering Area, moderate extent; and Learning at Home, great extent.

Sadly, in the communication sector, some parents were not communicating with each other during every activity in school. If this continues to exist, the school could not create a collective strength that could promote academic excellence among its students.

As moderate extent, the volunteering sector divulged that some parents were not volunteering in school-based feeding program that supposedly encourages cooperation and unity. Unhappily, their absence losses its drive for a powerful school ramp.

The learning at home sector that is in great extent suffers the fact that some parents have not established a consistent home-study habit for their children. Home study is essential because it provides them with time to refresh and learn deeper on the classrooms teachings.

Despite of declining parental involvement, learners have maintained their level of academic performances because they are largely dependent with technology-aided learning process through smartphones. They are most bound to perform the way their minds do.

Although a student's academic performance reaches satisfactory level, he could not maintain the level or even could not finish his study without parental involvement in school.

Still, we cannot negate the impact of parental involvement. The school needs it. The learners need their parents strong visibility in school. The community requires families to have better participation in the school activities.

To retort the issue, recommendations have been collaborated.

Communications:

During the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) meeting, classroom teachers must educate the parents about the critical importance of communicating with one another for ease of cooperation. The meeting may be concluded with the teacher asking the parents to sign a commitment form to be actively involved starting with cooperation.

Volunteering:

Since the feeding program is implemented on scheduled-basis, the issue can be resolved by scheduling the parents per feeding activity only. The classroom teacher may need to create a calendar of volunteers so as to let everyone have a fair share of volunteerism in the feeding program.

Learning at home:

The parents should have a clear agreement with the children in establishing an agreed study time at home. Parents should listen to the suggestions of their children as to the time and place most convenient to study while at home. Parents should not enforce their own will in proposing for the study time at home. A consensus between their children must be reached and must be strictly followed.

Active parental involvement enthuses students to learn better and perform well academically as has already been shown by our three local, visible examples.
