Dex Ian Chavez: Pride of Cadiz

EVERY player dreams of becoming the most valuable player (MVP) in his or her field of sports.

For Dex Ian Chavez, an MVP is no longer an elusive dream as he holds the MVP title in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 94 Finals, with three gold medals in Taekwondo events.

A black belter in Taekwondo, Ian was a two-time gold medalist in the Best of the Best at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in 2018 and 2019.

He was also a two-time gold medalist in CPJ Taekwondo Championships at SM Mall of Asia Arena in 2019.

At 18 years old, Ian is the youngest member of the elite Philippine Taekwondo National Team for years. He represented the country in several international Taekwondo competitions.

During the Philippines 30th Southeast Asian Games or 2019 SEA Games, Ian earned a bronze medal and in the same year captured a bronze medal during the Chuncheun Korean Open in South Korea.

He participated in the 2018 World Junior Taekwondo Championships, Youth Olympic Games in the North African Country of Tunisia; 2019 Taekwondo Grand slam in Wuxi, China; 2019 World Senior Taekwondo Championships in Manchester, United Kingdom; and, 2020 Tokyo Test Event in Japan.

Inspired by family and friends, and people who believe in him, Ian was a two-time gold medalist on the 2017 and 2019 Palarong Pambansa in Antique and Davao, respectively.

A freshman Bachelor of Science in Hotel Management student at Arellano University in Metro Manila, Ian philosophizes that “doubt is only removed by action. If you’re not working, then that’s where doubt comes in.”

A graduate of Dr. Vicente F. Gustilo Memorial National High School, Ian who aims to be successful in the future, completed his Senior High School at Arellano University.

He is the son of proud parents, Taekwondo coach/ trainer Dexter Chavez and Aileen Chavez.
