Limlingan: Far from over

THE global fight against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) is far from over as figures in different parts of the world continue to soar high. The recent country that is included now among the worst-hit is South Africa while the United States of America is now experiencing a rapid increase in the number of Covid-19 cases.

Seemingly, the return to normal life is still far from sight and that includes in our country with the number of cases also increasing. Many Filipinos these days have their quarantine fatigue set in as we look forward to returning to our normal ways of living just like before.

To be on guard, face masks, physical distancing, alcohol and soap remain to be our only weapon against the virus sans any vaccine to make us safe under the previous normal way of living. This is the situation while pharmaceutical companies race against time to produce the ultimate solution against the Covid-19.

An update on the global pandemic reveals that Covid-19 deaths have reached more than 600,000 and 14,100,000 confirmed infections. Contributing to the increase in the numbers are the lifting of lockdowns and the lukewarm observance of protocols.

Government authorities should mind their language, their statistics and other information on the pandemic when announcing such in public. Health Secretary Francisco Duque III has been "electrocuted" not once but twice with his careless announcements.

At the height of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ), Duque has announced that the country is on its second wave of the pandemic. Many were surprised for such information including his fellow government officials and the public.

As a result, he was immensely bashed including netizens and Facebook users. Many even called for his resignation as the highest official of the health portfolio.

Recently, Duque was again the subject of ridicule when he announced that we have already flattened the curve despite the opposite. Many were dismayed and expressed disbelief for such considering some "fake news" coming from the health secretary himself.

Calls for his resignation became louder for his careless and irresponsible "electrifying" announcement. Despite such, however, he is untouchable. His excuse was that he really meant "we have successfully bent the curve."
