Raldz Jocson: Living up to his potential

RALDZ Loren Mabaquiao Jocson, a grade 10 student of Philippine Normal University Visayas-Center for Teaching and Learning, captured a gold medal in Advanced Level Individual Category during the World Mathematics Team Championships late last year in Beijing, China.

The Philippine Team where Jocson belonged, ranked 8th place. They won a gold medal in Advanced Level Team Category.

The international championship event was participated by more than 1000 delegates from Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Macau, Brazil, Bulgaria, Australia and Malaysia.

Prior to his inclusion in the Philippines Team, 17-year-old Jocson was required to attend the yearly Mathematical Trainers Guild (MTG) 12-Saturday Training in Victorias City. He also underwent the three-day In-House Training in Iloilo, Boracay, Manila and Batangas.

The In-House training qualified him to advance in the five-week Mathematical Olympiad Summit Training in Manila that determined who would join in the Philippines Team.

Jocson, 17, also represented the country in various international competitions. He participated in the 2014 King of Math International Mathematics Contest in Hong Kong where he was awarded the Merit Award; Pan-Asia Pacific International Mathematics Invitation Competition, Merit Award, Hong Kong; China Primary Math Olympiad, Silver Medal, China, 2015; International Mathematics and Science Olympiad, Science Category, Bronze Medal, Thailand, 2015; International Mathematics Contest, Bronze Medal, Singapore, 2016; International Mathematics Contest, Silver Medal, Singapore, 2017; and, Olympic Mathematics 3D Cup Pan-Asia Pacific International Invitation Competition, Silver Medal, Hong Kong, 2018.

He was the consistent Mathematics Teachers Association of the Philippines (MTAP) Top Scorer (Individual Category) and First Place (Team Category) from Grade 1 to Grade 10. At grade 6, he got the fourth place when he represented Cadiz City in the Regional MTAP-Math Challenge.

At grade 2, Jocson lectured about the astronomy before the students and teachers of Cadiz East 1 Elementary School, third and fourth year college students of PNUV.

A recipient of Student Excellence Award by the Department of Education in 2019, he received his 5th Youth Excellence in Science Award by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) in 2020.

Jocson, who enjoys watching Japanese animated shows, would pursue his Senior High School at Rizal Technological University in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila.

Dreaming of becoming an astrophysicist, Jocson wants to take up Bachelor of Science in Astronomy, major in Astro-Physics also at the RTU.

The only son of Dr. Ralger Jocson Jr. and Lorena Mabaquiao, Raldz Loren Jocson wishes to thank his family, friends and everyone who inspired and helped him achieve those awards.
