SKC Awards citation for SEA Games champ

DAVAO City athletes Southeast Asian (SEA) Games 2019 women's arnis gold medalist Jezebel Morcillo, along with notable chessers international master (IM) John Marvin Miciano and Samantha Umayan, will receive citations as the 26th So Kim Cheng Sports Foundation Awards unfurls at 3 p.m. of July 22 and 23 at Eskina at BizPark in Lanang Business Park, Davao City.

It can be recalled that SEA Games newbie Morcillo defeated Vietnam's Nguyen ThiHuong via unanimous decision in their women's 50 kilograms (kg) live stick championship match on December 1 at the Angeles University Foundation in Angeles City, Pampanga.

The 25-year-old Morcillo, a native of Sultan Kudarat, also brought pride and honor for Davao City before joining the national arnis team last year following a tryout for the 30th SEA Games that the country hosted. She collected several medals, including golds, for the city in past editions of the Palarong Pambansa and the Philippine National Games (PNG). She last competed in the PNG 2018 in Cebu City where she also clinched a gold.

Meanwhile, Miciano and Umayan will be cited for their achievements in chess for the past year.

Miciano, who was a recipient of the 25th SKC male athlete of the year last year, emerged champion in the Philippine qualifying tournament of the Asian Junior Online Chess 2020-Zone 3.3. He copped a silver in Eastern Asia Junior Chess Championship and swept one gold, three silvers and one bronze in the Asean Age-Group Chess Championships.

Umayan, 13, for her part, won three silvers in the 29th Asean+ Age Group Chess Championships 2019. She also annexed a silver in the National Age Group Chess Championships Visayas Leg, among her other achievements.

Batang Pinoy National Finals gold karatedo gold medalist Robert Lawrence Avancena and Batang Pinoy National Finals arnis gold medalist Sherhalee Bulaso will be feted as male and female athletes of the year, respectively.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Commissioner Ramon Fernandez will also be conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was awarded to PSC Commissioner Charles Raymond A. Maxey in 2019.

Organizers, in observance of the government's guideline prohibiting public mass gathering such as sports activities, will still distribute awards to a limited number of recipients per day.

Strict healthy safety protocols will also be implemented at the awarding site complete with a temperature scanner and contact tracing forms. All attendees are also required to wear face masks and practice social distancing. Senior citizens and awardees below 21 years old are also prohibited from attending.

The annual SKC Sports Awards recognizes the feats of homegrown athletes in different sports who have made a mark in various competitions. Top coaches, officials, supporters and officials are also cited.
