Lacson: Quaran-things

THANK Tiktok for sparing us from a super boring quarantine, but there are still other things that have been discovered or rediscovered while we spent the time locked in the comfort of our homes. But the three-month lockdown has given birth to new things, and old favorites as well.

As the first few weeks of the enhanced community quarantine passed by, I noticed how some of my Facebook friends post their everyday dishes which are indeed sumptuous and tempting! It even came to a point of me unfollowing some of them out of frustration because we're too scared to go to the market to buy the ingredients and cook the same meal for our consumption. It was like drooling over the yummy dishes that the neighbor has prepared for the day. Somehow, it felt like torture at some point, I guess.

Since I was kept busy by both work at home and mommy duties during the lockdown, I did not have the time to do my usual hobbies. However, most of my friends actually were very productive that many of them also started baking cookies and other pastries which are, in fact, now being sold to other people. What started as a quarantine past time now became an online business for some people who love baking sweets and other treats. Most baking shops have actually run out of baking supplies as almost every household has a quarantine baker at home. Have you tried the now-famous ube cheesedesal?

Still about food, the ECQ also gave birth to one of my new favorite food. That is the baked sushi! Banking on our never-ending love for Japanese food, the baked sushi took us all by storm as it is reinvented into a new experience of eating sushi. Either you're buying it from online food establishments or making your own following DIY videos online, anyone can easily go crazy over this reborn sushi goodness of kani, mangoes, and nori! My FB wall flooded with pictures of baked sushi that I couldn't help but make it also in time for the Father's Day Celebration.

Recently, I noticed that many of my acquaintances and some close friends have started growing plants, both edible and non-edible. What is currently trending now are potted plants using designed and customized clay pots that may be used as home decors. I even get amazed by their business names such as Plantio and Plantita, ReadyGetSetGrow, The Garage Farmer, and other playful and catchy memes to boost their newfound planting endeavor.

Indeed, when life gives you lemons, make a lemonade. This is what Filipinos did during the three-month lockdown. Of course, while most of us stayed at home to avoid contracting Covid-19, there are still some who are hard-headed and are not following the health protocols. The battle against the virus is not yet over, we have not flattened the curve yet. Let us follow all the health guidelines so we can be safe not just for ourselves but also for our loved ones.
