THE Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA), has turned over P1.8 million worth of farm inputs to 93 farmer associations in the province.

Dina Genzola, supervising agriculturist, said the province is implementing the Climate-Smart Agriculture Project mainly to strengthen the adaptive capacity and increase crop production and income of farmers in Negros Occidental.

Genzola said the initiative also enables local farmers to adjust and mitigate the impacts of climate change through different program components like provision of vegetable seeds, organic fertilizers, capability training and rainwater harvesting technology.

“The project is positioned to help associations and their farmer-members especially during this coronavirus disease pandemic and while adverse effects of climate change prevail,” she said, adding that it aims to equip farmers in adapting measures and strategies that can help boost their production.

The project, funded through the 2018 Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Trust Fund, is implemented from 2020 to 2021.

The recipient-associations are those who are active in supporting and participating in the agricultural development of the province.

These include Heroes of Negros Occidental Farmers and Fisherfolk Association, Pambansang Magsasaka ng Pilipinas, Indigenous Peoples, and City and Municipal Agriculture and Fishery Councils, among others.
