1 dead, 3 missing after tricycle sweeps away into river

ONE person was confirmed dead while three others are still missing after their tricycle was swept away while crossing an overflow located at the Binalbagan River in the town of Moises Padilla in Negros Occidental, Tuesday afternoon, July 28, 2020.

Authorities identified the fatality as 17-year-old Danilo Banaag, Jr., a resident of the said town. Three other victims identified as 50-year-old Roldan Banaag Sr., 48-year-old Jovelyn Banaag and 17-year-old Edmund Samson remain missing.

Moises Padilla Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office head Reynald Herogue said the victims originated from a birthday party in the town's Barangay Magallon Cadre and were heading home at the time of the incident.

Herogue said there were two tricycles involved in the incident, although the other tricycle driven by Roldan Banaag, Jr. managed to cross safely.

The incident was even captured on video by an onlooker from a footbridge located near the overflow, showing the group's attempt to cross the overflow. Four people were also seen in the water being swept away by the strong current of water.

Danilo Jr.'s remains were recovered Wednesday morning, while authorities are continuing their search and rescue operations for the remaining three missing individuals.
