Bayan Muna appeals to SC (7:02 p.m.)

BAYAN Muna party-list group appealed Wednesday to the Supreme Court (SC) to revoke its decision in allowing President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to appoint new Chief Justice.

The Supreme Court on March 17 ruled that Arroyo can choose the replacement of retiring Chief Justice Reynato Puno.

According to Bayan Muna, this authority given to Arroyo will only lead to appointing more officials in the government within a period of two months before her term ends.

Several groups have already filed their appeal to the highest court's pronouncement.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) recently contended that SC's decision is premature saying that Puno is yet to retire.

Aside from Comelec, presidential bets JC delos Reyes, Manny Villar, Noynoy Aquino III, Richard Gordon and Joseph Estrada; the National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers (NUPL); and Akbayan party-list are also one in their objection to the court's ruling.

Bayan Muna also said they will be among the vanguards to the appeal.

Meanwhile, the Catholic church calls for vigilance in Arroyo's choice of the new chief justice rather than argue with the issued decision. (Rachelle Sindo/Sunnex)
