Cops kill crime group member in shootout

POLICEMEN have killed in a shootout an alleged member of a crime group in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police reported Monday.

Police Captain Edwin Duco, Police Regional Office (PRO)-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, identified the slain alleged crime group member as Ricky Lantaca, a resident of Tangub City, Misamis Occidental.

Duco said that Lantaca was killed in a shootout with policemen around 7:20 p.m. Sunday along the highway at Purok Salingsing in Balintawak village, Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur.

Duco said that Lantaca was seen was along the roadside when policemen launched a sting operation after they received report on the presence of a person lurking at Purok Salingsing in Balintawak village.

He said that Lantaca pulled a handgun and opened fire but missed his target when about to be stopped and frisked by the policemen.

He said the policemen returned fire hitting the suspect, who died instantaneously. Recovered from the at the shootout scene were a caliber .45 pistol inserted with magazine; one fired cartridge case of caliber 45 pistol; one live ammunition of caliber. 45 pistol; and, four fired cartridge of 9-mm pistol.

He said that Lantaca is allegedly one of the gun-for-hire personality and person of interest of robbery with homicide and carnapping incidents in Pagadian City based on the recovered closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage. (SunStar Zamboanga)
