Limpag: Jumping ship

SO, MORE and more athletes from the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) are jumping ship with the league shut down for the next season. Some are saying the league jumped the gun early and should have adopted a wait-and-see attitude instead of cancelling the season as early as April.

Well, they are right in the same way that the league is also right in taking such action. It’s a cliche but we are in a situation which no one has been in before. There’s so much uncertainty and we don’t know what will happen next month.

Heck, we could all have some semblance of the old normal or we could all be still locked in our houses, waiting for the neighbor who has that quarantine pass to arrive home so we can use it ourselves.

I agree with the savvy Rico Navarro though. Schools in Cebu don’t hold their players back but only wish that the athletes themselves have the decency to inform them of their moves. That should be the least you can do for an institution that has nurtured you, right?

As to Cesafi and its members, what will happen to the league? Man, if you take a look around outside (with a quarantine pass, of course), you’d realize that survival is the number one concern. I returned to the city for the first time since March and all I see around are establishments with their shutters down. Some didn’t even have a solitary guard assigned to guard the building. And that was a Monday.

How many folks do you think have lost their jobs in the past few months and as a result, how many students won’t be going back to schools? The drop in enrollment is going to be felt by the schools, which will be tightening belts as a result.

If you think that schools shouldn’t be thinking about profit, and education must be free, be careful now. That’s a leftist thought and we all know what the government thinks about the left these days, right?

Organized sports events are still a long way off from happening in the Queen City of the South and that’s just about right.

As for the athletes, well, I don’t think you can blame them for jumping ship, but I hope they think long-term and inform their schools properly. I mean, they won’t be playing forever, right? And if somehow they see themselves getting involved with their alma mater anew behind the bench or in the boardroom, a little courtesy will go a long way.
