WITH the new normal in place, I often wondered whether or not the old norm would ever come back in our daily lives? Will we still be able to experience all of the stuff we previously enjoyed?
In retrospect, I make a journey to the past.
We were able to make impromptu decisions. But that is no longer feasible as there are so many things to consider before leaving the house. While before we did our marketing and banking transactions at any time according to bank hours, with the new normal, access to wet markets and banks needs to coincide with the number coding and the non-residents’ schedule as imposed by the municipality or city.
Trips to the gym, spa, beauty salon, massage parlor and movie house were made according to one’s whim. These were occasions when mothers would recharge and break the daily routine at home.
Dinner dates were arranged notwithstanding health issues. Gimmicks at the bars, videoke and other social activities were spontaneous.
Children are definitely missing entertainment places and amusement parks. Parents who were able to chronicle the memorable moments may pat themselves on the back for they may never be able to duplicate those priceless moments. Now we have to think of ingenious ways to get the children entertained at home. Their confinement could have serious effects on their physical and mental health.
Weekend and summer getaways were occasions that adults and children looked forward to. The enticing seawater and sandy beachfronts were always a part of the lives of people who wanted to retreat from the dusty and noisy city life.
Resorts and mountain adventures only depended on our availability and budget. Now, procurement of vehicular passes, quarantine passes, health certificates and acceptance certificates make the journey planning a nightmare.
We used to go to the fruit stands and pick our delicious snacks. Presently, we have them delivered all packed. Sometimes, we get frustrated because the quality does not meet our standards.
What I miss most is my trip to the bookstores. As a writer, I buy books for research materials since I am not the type who is contented browsing the internet for information. I also love selecting reading materials appropriate for my grandchildren.
Well, there is one thing I do not miss. My son Ernesto, a connoisseur on gourmet coffee, prepares freshly made espresso and latte even better than what I had in mall cafés.
