Limpag: Global FC: From fat club to flat club

Limpag: Global FC: From fat club to flat club

OH HOW the mighty has fallen.

The once great Global Football Club is now in danger of being blacklisted after the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) has stepped in the standing row between the club and its unpaid players. Now, the list doesn’t only include the current players but also former players who haven’t seen their salaries almost a year after receiving promises to be paid.

Jerry Barbaso, the club’s longest tenured player, is among those who has come collecting and he has a P1.6 million tab.

I know some of the former players have lost hope of ever collecting their salaries, but got their hopes revived when the current batch revealed their problems.

What’s the reason behind this financial instability of this once storied club? There has been so many changes in ownership in the past three years, when the club played in Cebu that I’ve lost trace. Is it the reluctance of the new owners to shoulder the debts of the previous? Or did the new owners come in assuming there were no financial obligations and were shocked to know that there were?

Whatever the case, Global and its current management and owner has 10 days to answer the GAB chairman Baham Mitra, else it face the ill prospect of being the first football club to be blacklisted. This isn’t the first time Mitra got wind of the situation. A year or so ago, when Cebuano John Roy Melgo was among those who were collecting, I got in touch with the chairman to help the players collect their salaries. Melgo has since returned to Cebu and boy did he have a lot of tales of woes about his stint.

I’m sure Mitra, one of the hardest working GAB chairmen I’ve come across with, will have that in mind when he meets with Global management.

I am still hoping for a miracle and for a win-win solution for both team owner and players to be found. You see, having a team blacklisted will not bode well for the league and Philippine football.

Global FC has a rich history and I hope the club can stay afloat, whoever owns it now. Everyone knows the economic conditions of the country is far from perfect but I hope the club can somehow find a miracle cure to its problems.

I’m still hoping something positive comes out of this (well, being a Philippine football fan, you can’t help but hope for a positive in a dire situation). But if that involves GAB swinging the ax or the club forced to take a leave in the league, well I hope whatever that will be will be something the club can dig out of and be the club it once was.
