Active cases double in 10 days

ACTIVE coronavirus cases in the Philippines increased to 72,348 Wednesday, August 12, roughly double the 35,569 active cases on August 2.

In its 4 p.m. case bulletin Wednesday, the Department of Health (DOH) also reported a new single-day high of 93 deaths, raising the death toll from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) to 2,404.

Most of these deaths, or 49, occurred in July, 30 in June and one in May. Only 13 happened in August.

DOH also listed 636 additional patients who have recovered from Covid-19, increasing the total recoveries to 68,997.

The agency said it has confirmed an additional 4,444 cases of infection, which brought the total to 143,749.

Of the total, 72,348 were active, referring to patients who are in the hospitals or in quarantine. Some 233 duplicates were removed from the total case count.

Of the 4,444 additional cases Wednesday, more than half or 2,618 were from the National Capital Region (NCR).

Provinces with the highest number of cases were Laguna with 233 new cases, Cavite with 227, Rizal with 174 and Bulacan with 129.

Among the additional mortalities, 67 came from Central Visayas, 16 from NCR, three from Zamboanga Peninsula, one from Calabarzon, and two each from Bicol, Western Visayas and Davao. (Marites Villamor-Ilano/SunStar Philippines)
