USC, UC among top 10 law schools in country

TWO Cebu law schools landed in the Top 10 Performing Schools in the 2019 Bar Examination in the country.

Based on the report issued by the Legal Education Board (LEB) and posted on its official Facebook page on Aug. 11, 2020, the University of San Carlos (USC) and the University of Cebu (UC) ranked fifth and sixth respectively in the ranking of law schools nationwide based on the overall performance of examinees for schools with at least 63 examinees in the previous bar exam.

USC had a passing rate of 65.31 percent after 64 of its 98 takers passed. UC, likewise, garnered a passing rate of 60.32 percent as 38 of its 63 takers passed the exam.

USC, during the 2018 bar exam, ranked third with a 72.45 passing rate. It was then the only law school in Cebu to be among the Top 10 Performing Schools in the 2018 Bar Examination.

Al-Shwaid Ismael, dean of UC’s School of Law, welcomed this development.

He said the full support of the university’s administration and its passionate and dedicated faculty members are behind this success.

Noting that this is not the first time that UC made it to the Top 10 in bar exams, Ismael said: “That it ranked sixth among law schools nationwide is a fantastic accomplishment. It is proof of the quality of legal education and good training that the law school provides.”

UC’s pioneer batch 2006 ranked fourth in the overall ranking, he said.

He said they have revisited and revised their academic curriculum and policies, set more precise goals and direction for the law school and introduced innovations consistent with their new vision, which is to lead quality legal education, ethical excellence, global competence and social responsiveness.

The Top 3 performing law schools for those with at least 63 examinees were the University of the Philippines (82.46 percent passing rate), followed by the Ateneo de Manila University (81.38 percent) and San Beda University (77.55 percent).

USC also ranked sixth (with 72.97 percent) for the New Examinee Performance in the 2019 Bar Exam. UC followed with a 64.44 passing rate. The University of San Jose-Recoletos ranked eighth with 51.79 percent after 29 out of its 56 new examinees passed the Bar exam.

San Beda University (86.78 percent), the University of the Philippines (86.01 percent) and the Ateneo de Manila University (85.47 percent) ranked first, second and third, respectively, for the New Examinee Performance in the 2019 Bar Exam. (WBS)
