MAYOR Ma. Rosario Avestruz of Barugo, Leyte on Wednesday, August 12, 2020, said that there is no local transmission of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in their town.

“With our Covid-19 patients properly contained and managed, it is with utmost confidence that we can categorically say that we do not have any local transmission. However, it falls upon the expertise and responsibility of the Department of Health (DOH) to determine which place has Covid-19 local transmission,” Avestruz said.

“In this time of pandemic, correct information is crucial. Let us all be responsible for the information we share and be critical to the information we believe in to prevent chaos and panic,” she added.

However, the mayor said she has yet to receive any official information or advisory from the DOH that Barugo has local transmission, as of press time.

According to the mayor, all Covid-19 cases in their town “are either locally stranded individuals or returning overseas Filipinos except for the recent case of Patient EV-1339.”

EV-1339, a health worker assigned in one of the nearby towns in Barugo, provides direct service to the LSI, ROF and returning residents of the said nearby town.

Also, contact tracing has been done to identify the close contacts of EV-1339.

“Furthermore, all our Covid-19 patients are isolated in our Covid-19 facility for mild cases,” the mayor said in a statement.

DOH said that local transmission occurs when an infected person has no history of travel and has no contact with a Covid-19 positive patient.

Meanwhile, Avestruz urged the public to stay calm amid the report that Barugo is classified to have a local case of Covid-19.

“Should there be any relevant information pertaining to the health and safety of everyone, rest assured that we will provide adequate and on-time information,” she assured her constituents.

The mayor also reminded the residents to maintain the prescribed health measures against the spread of the virus, including the wearing of face masks, observing physical distancing, avoiding mass gathering and washing/disinfecting of hands.

“We at the local government unit cannot do it alone. We need the help and cooperation of everyone,” Avestruz said.

On Wednesday, the mayor and other municipal workers also welcomed another resident who fully recovered from Covid-19.
