Ban on overseas deployment of healthcare workers stays

THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on Friday, August 14, 2020, said the ban on overseas deployment of nurses and other selected healthcare workers has not been lifted.

In a statement, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said there is no truth to reports that the government has relaxed the restrictions.

"The public is hereby warned that any overseas deployment of nurses, unless expressly authorized by the POEA, is deemed illegal," Bello said.

The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) passed a resolution in April imposing the ban, citing the dwindling human resources in local hospitals and medical facilities amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

Aside from nurses, others not allowed to leave for overseas jobs are medical doctor/physician, microbiologist molecular biologist, medical technologist, clinical analyst, respiratory therapist, pharmacist, laboratory technician, X-ray/radiologic technician, nursing assistant/nursing aide, operator of medical equipment, supervisor of health services and personal care, and repairman of medical-hospital equipment.
