PFL teams resume battle in AFC Cup in September

PHILIPPINES Football League (PFL) clubs United City Football Club, formerly called Ceres-Negros FC and Kaya FC-Iloilo will resume their campaign in the group stage of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Cup 2020 on Sept. 23, 2020.

UCFC, whose change of name is still under process by the Philippine Football Federation, is in Group H and will play all of its games at the Cam Pha Stadium in Quang Ninh, Vietnam. Kaya FC-Iloilo, on the other hand, is in Group H and will play in a yet-to-be-finalized venue.

UCFC’s first assignment is against Bali United on Sept. 23, 2020, then Cambodian club Syay Rieng FC on Sept. 26, 2020 and then home team Than Quang Ninh on Sept. 29, 2020.

UCFC is still unbeaten with seven points from two wins and a draw. UCFC, which was called Ceres-Negros at that time, outclassed Bali United, 4-0, at the Rizal Memorial Stadium in March before the Covid-19 pandemic halted all sporting events.

On the other hand, Kaya FC-Iloilo is up against Indonesia’s PSM Makasaar on Sept. 23, 2020, then Myanmar’s Shan United on Sept. 26, 2020, before ending the group stage with a match against Singaporean club Tampines Rovers on Sept. 29, 2020.

Kaya FC-Iloilo is in second place in Group H with five points from a win and two draws. Kaya FC-Iloilo last saw action also in March with a 1-1 draw with PSM Makasaar in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, UCFC finalized its roster after acquiring 22-year-old Fil-Swiss goalkeeper Anthony Pinthus on loan from the Azkals Development Team.

Pinthus is one of the promising young goalkeepers in the country. He saw action in the 30th Southeast Asian Games as the Philippines Under-23 team’s main goalkeeper. / EKA
