While most people only see the finished output, there’s always a narrative behind the process— untold accounts of memorable experiences by the talents behind the lens. In celebration of World Photography Day (Aug. 19), six photographers share one of their favorite photos and the special stories behind them:

“As a photographer who shoots mostly inanimate objects like food and products under very controlled environments, it’s always refreshing to photograph people outdoors where lighting conditions could change every minute and nothing is ever certain. But good timing (or sheer luck) allows you to capture fleeting moments like this. This has three of my favorite elements in one photo: Sweetlighting, motion and lines.”

“This is of personal nature so my bias toward it is understandable. It was during a special moment in my life: My wife Tanya and I were preparing for our wedding. This picture has a special place in my heart because beyond the aesthetic appeal, stylized composition and dramatic flair, the preparation was intense. I worked with a small team and on the day of the shoot, I was not only the photographer, but also the director, lightsman, liaison, among other things. More than anything, this was a love letter to my wife. I would go the extra mile to make her feel special and our relationship picture-perfect.”

“This photo was taken in Biri Island, a municipality in Northern Samar fronting the Pacific Ocean. It took us a two-hour ferry boat ride and a 30-minute hike to get to this beautiful islet. I was lucky to find a couple, Brylle and Shawna,
who went with my idea and took the risk of going to this island. This photo reminds me of the reason why I decided to become a photographer: The excitement and adrenaline that come with the
job. It was quite an experience.”

“This photo was shot in Tipolo, Mandaue where a fire had just ravaged the area, including the home of the couple who I
was shooting for their prenup. They had also cancelled their wedding initially after losing their child earlier that same month. I decided to offer my services as a way of helping and showcasing their experiences through photographs. I love this photo because it captures the essence of their love, showing that despite all the unfortunate events, they remain happy together. The rain also signifies a blessing that puts an end to the fire, which is evident in the smiles of their neighbors.”

“I’ve been doing lifestyle photography for more than a decade now so it’s hard to single out a favorite photo. But if I had to choose, it would have to be the commissioned photoshoot in Calicoan Island for Banago. I had just come from a bunch of commitments that week prior to the shoot, but my exhaustion went away the moment I saw how breathtaking our backdrop was. While the shoot came with its own challenges, I was inspired to be in my best shape knowing that I was with a great team working with a world-class brand. At the end of the day, I was just ecstatic that my team and I delivered beyond what was
expected and the client was happy.”
