THE Himamaylan City Government has received P7 million worth of Rice Resiliency Project (RRP) Expanded Hybrid Rice Production in Suitable Areas of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The amount covers 997 bags of hybrid rice seeds and 2,991 bags of Urea fertilizer to be distributed to farmer-beneficiaries of the southern Negros Occidental city.

The inputs were turned over by Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson to the city officials led by Mayor Raymund Tongson Jr. at the Capitol Grounds in Bacolod City Tuesday, August 18.

The RRP is under the DA's Agri Plant, Plant, Plant Program (4Ps), which aims to increase local rice production as measure to combat global trade uncertainties and ensure food availability, accessibility and affordability.

The Agri 4Ps is also known as "Alpas sa Covid-19" or Ahon Lahat Pagkaing Sapat Kontra Covid-19.

The Expanded Hybrid Rice Production in Suitable Areas is one of the three sub-projects of the RRP.

The two others are Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF)-Enhanced and Expanded Inbred Rice Production.

Under which, the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental has a total allocation of 21,364 bags of hybrid rice seeds with 64,092 bags of fertilizer as component.

These inputs were distributed throughout the province based on its irrigated areas.

Records of the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) showed that Himamaylan City has already received an allocation of 1,090 bags of hybrid rice seeds and 3,270 bags of fertilizer.

Due to the increase of rice farmers enrolled in the city's Registry for Basic Sector in Agriculture, however, additional allocation was requested and approved.

OPA is mandated to supervise the RRP among other programs of the DA that are implemented in the province.

As they thanked the Provincial Government and the DA, the city officials are upbeat that the program will benefit local farmers and ensure food security and agricultural productivity in the locality.

Also present during the turnover were Third District Board Member Andrew Montelibano, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan committee on food and agriculture, Fifth District Board Members Tinto Bascon and Rita Gatuslao, Himamaylan City Vice Mayor Justin Gatuslao, Noemi Aledron of DA-Western Visayas and Provincial Agriculturist Japhet Masculino.
