Coronavirus cases, deaths jump

THE Department of Health (DOH) recorded Wednesday, August 19, 2020, an additional 4,650 cases of coronavirus infections and 111 deaths, one of the highest in a day.

The total case count in the country increased to 173,774, of which 57,498 were active, referring to patients who are in the hospitals or in quarantine.

Eighty-nine duplicates were removed from the total.

The biggest number of new cases came from the National Capital Region (NCR), with 3,092 new cases on the first day of the easing of quarantine measures.

Provinces with the highest number of new cases were still Cavite with 249, Laguna with 194, Rizal with 189 and Bulacan with 136.

The agency reported 111 mortalities, of which 76 occurred in August, 13 in July, eight in June, nine in May and five in April.

The death toll from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) as of August 19 was 2,795.

Nearly half of these additional deaths Wednesday, or 52, were from the NCR.

Other mortalities came from Central Visayas, 29; Calabarzon, 11; Central Luzon, six; Zamboanga Peninsula, four; four repatriates; Western Visayas, two; and one each from Bicol, Davao and Barmm.

DOH also reported 716 recoveries, bringing the total recoveries to 113,481.

Among the active cases, 1.2 percent were in critical condition, 0.9 percent were in severe condition, 91.4 percent had mild symptoms and 6.5 percent did not develop symptoms. (Marites Villamor-Ilano/SunStar Philippines)
