UC to provide students computer, internet access

THE University of Cebu (UC) will be providing access to computers and internet around Cebu province for the exclusive use of its students and teachers.

UC chancellor Candice G. Gotianuy said they have partnered with Fr. Francisco Silva of Cebu Electric Cooperative (Cebeco) who allowed the school to install computers in Cebeco offices in the cities of Toledo, Carcar and Bogo, the Toledo City Public Information Office reported on its Facebook page.

“We will be using computers from our own labs. Fr. Silva has graciously allowed us the use of his spacious facilities for our sole use,” Gotianuy said.

She further said: “As cabling is expensive, we are looking for internet cafes that we can rent for the exclusive use of UCnians. This will lessen the need for students and faculty for devices, connectivity and possibly food, lodging and transport fare (assuming the public transportation will be running).”

Gotianuy said the school management understands that majority of their students and teachers have limited access to devices and internet providers.

Compliant school

UC, she said, will comply with all guidelines of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases and respect local guidelines as well.

“Please note that we are not setting up schools. We are merely providing access to computers and Internet cafes. Social distancing, regular cleaning and the use of disinfectants as well as face shields and masks will be required,” Gotianuy said.

The daughter of UC president Augusto W. Go felt grateful to Toledo City Mayor Marjorie Perales for the warm welcome she gave to UC. She awaits a response from Carcar City and Bogo City mayors.

Open campuses

Gotianuy said “all UC campuses will be open for students and teachers who wish to use the computers, facilities and internet connectivity. Guidelines to follow.”

UC has three campuses in Cebu City: the main campus on Sanciangko St., Banilad campus on Gov. Cuenco Ave., and Mambaling campus (also known as the Maritime Educational Training Center/UC-METC) on Alumnos St. It has one situated on A.C. Cortes Ave. in Barangay Looc, Mandaue City: UC-LM campus (which stands for the cities Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue).
