THE number of cases of dengue in Central Visayas this year is 41.16 percent lower than of the same period in 2019.

Department of Health (DOH) Central Visayas spokesperson Mary Jean Loreche said that from January 2020to Aug. 22, 2020, the DOH recorded 9,688 dengue cases.

Loreche said they also recorded 27 mortalities.

Despite it nearing the 10,000-mark, Loreche said this is lower compared to the same period in 2019 wherein DOH recorded more than 16,000 dengue cases and 98 deaths.

Loreche urged the local government units (LGUs) to continue being vigilant and practicing the “4S,” which means Search and destroy, Self-protection, Seek early consultation and Say no to indiscriminate fogging.

She said it is still too early to conclude that there will be fewer dengue cases this year, considering it is still August.

“We’re still in August but we intend to keep it this way,” said Loreche.

Loreche reminded the public, especially the LGUs, to continue conducting vaccination.

She also urged the public to avail of flu vaccination, considering that this period is considered as the flu season.

She said they are avoiding a “twindemic” which means simultaneous outbreaks. (JJL)
