Voter registration starts September

VOTER registration resumes September 1 and will run until September 30, 2021, giving those who want to cast their votes for the May 2022 national and local elections time to register.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Baguio Supervisor John Paul Martin said despite the resumption of the voters registration, prospective registrants will have to follow the changes the electoral tribunal is set to impose for the duration of the registration.

"We will reduce the face-to-face transactions to which we are advising registrants to download, print and fill out the forms for registration before proceeding to Comelec offices to process their registration through biometrics to reduce the time of their stay in our offices. Prior to proceeding to our offices, registrant's are advised to set a booking schedule for the particular date of their registration," Martin said.

Health declaration certificates will also be required by the electoral tribunal in the registration process. The certificates should also be filled out prior to the booking procedures for their convenient time and date.

"When registrants who have booked their registration schedule with our office, all will have to undergo temperature reading procedure, the logging of their personal circumstances, the submission to our desk officers of their filled up forms followed by the issuance of a number to which upon announcement of their numbers, they will undergo biometrics procedure and the leave the premises of our offices to prevent the possible spread of the virus," Martin added.

The electoral tribunal will also accommodate prospective registrants who have no access to download the forms "which will be booked by our office on a later date."

"We will not encourage registrants to fill their forms at our office because this takes time, aside from observing social distancing during the registration process. For Baguio City, we have our own Comelec Facebook page similar to that of Benguet to which they can download and print the registration and health declaration forms, for other registrants in the other provinces in the region, they can download the forms from our Comelec website which is www.comelec.gov.ph," Martin said.

For the first week of registration, slots intended for registrants for Comelec Baguio have been filled out or booked a month earlier, while prospective registrants may proceed starting September 8, Tuesday, until Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

"The reasons for the new protocol for office is due to the disinfection procedures being done in our office after 3pm. We will also be open during holidays provided it falls on Tuesdays until Saturdays," Martin added.
