MORE than just a group playing golf, Fakawee has been playing beyond hitting a small ball to raising funds for the group's outreach programs.

Fakawee has partnered with the Philippine Red Cross and the Rotary Club of Benguet for a medical-dental mission in Barangay Ambongdolan in Tublay, and a school outreach at the Ambuklao Elementary School.

These are from funds raised from golf tournament sponsorships, and recently from monthly tournaments.

Fakawee is an outcry of a lost tribe (whose story may upset readers) translated to lost balls and a golfer's affinity to sand traps, water hazards, and vegetation rough.

It is a group of five teams named after boys' high batches, playing every month in a venue selected by the loosing team of the previous round.

The three losing teams in a putting competition determines the "beer" sponsors for the next round, but with the pandemic and the liquor ban, this has changed with the losing teams contributing P7,500 to the outreach fund as suggested by Baguio Water District general manager Salvador Royeca.

Other traditions of the group are kept in confidence by the members (Jef Acop, Archie Almacen, Jun Bacungan, Ed Basbas, Jun Benavides, Danny Boac, Jun Boac, Joe Buhangin, Eli Colcol, Angel Costales, Dave Dela Cruz, Boni Dela Pena, Glen Flores, Simon Navarro, Joey Pangilinan, Terry Parker, Ron Perez, Budz Royeca, Sammy Salvador, Tony Boy Tabora, Wilbur Tagtag, Bert Talco, Cesar Tamesis, Richard Tan, Wilbert Tan, Rey Urbano, *Rommel Biagtan, *Mariano Tan, *Robert Calpotura).

This year's tournament dubbed "The City Administrator's Cup" is a tribute to Bonifacio Dela Peña's appointment as City Administrator under the leadership of Mayor Benjamin Magalong.

This year's outreach beneficiary will be decided by December, although Fakawee continues to support Barangay Ambongdolan. (PR)
