AS A figure under the public eye, people’s perceptions can often be biased and one-sided. As Lapu-Lapu City Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan’s better half, Ma. Cynthia “Cindi” King-Chan certainly knows a thing or two about this and dealing with the preconceived notions about her. She is known as Lapu-Lapu’s First Lady to most people, but Cindi is an empowered, multi-faceted woman who embodies what it means to be a supportive better half while being a force of her own.

Light of the family

When she’s not planning Lapu-Lapu’s next big event, she’s spending quality time with her husband and children. She has many achievements, but she considers being a wife and mother the most rewarding of all. During her husband’s State of the City Address last October, marking his first 100 days in office, Ahong called Cindi “the wind beneath my wings.”

At the end of a long day, she looks forward to unwinding at home with the people she values the most.

She considers herself fortunate to have role models in her own family growing up, such as her mother who raised her and her siblings as a single parent when their father died, and her great-great-grandmother Maria Rallos, also known as Nyora Inday, a true Cebuana trailblazer, culinary personality and author of “Lagda sa Pagpanluto” (1924).

Ambassadress of culture and tourism

Equipped with valuable experience in the private sector that exposed her to tourism and cultural affairs, she is determined to put Lapu-Lapu on the map and make it a world-renowned destination. During the first six months of her husband’s administration and even before she was appointed as the chairperson of the Tourism, Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission, she had already taken on a pivotal role in many of Lapu-Lapu’s major events such as the Regent Aguila Ironman 70.3 km and the 500-day countdown for the country’s quincentennial celebration.

Passionate humanitarian

Aside from culture and the arts, the First Lady has many advocacies she fervently supports, such as women’s rights and awareness of breast cancer, which her mom is a proud survivor of. Cindi organized the first-ever “Run for a

Cause” for Breast Cancer Awareness in Lapu-Lapu. She is also the honorary chairperson of the Kausaban Women group in Mactan and a part of the Board of Directors of the Philippine Red Cross Lapu-Lapu/Cordova chapter.

Dedicated public servant of the Oponganons

Since the start of the pandemic, the city’s resources have been utilized to provide relief aid to residents and workers of industries greatly affected like tourism and hospitality. Cindi actively participates in the distribution efforts of the city. Having been a resident of the city for more than two decades, she has a soft spot for the place she now calls home. With high hopes of the city being downgraded to modified general community quarantine soon, Cindi is ready to hit the ground running and help put the city’s recovery plan into action.
