EMBATTLED University of Santo Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers men’s basketball team head coach Aldin Ayo has already tendered his resignation from the post.

The controversial head coach, who is the subject of intense scrutiny following the revelation of an alleged training camp that he supposedly hosted in his hometown of Sorsogon starting in June, shared his resignation letter on Friday night, September 4.

"I deeply apologize to all those who have been adversely affected by our activity and unnecessary exposed to much condemnation especially the university. I take responsibility for my actions and shall face the appropriate sanctions," Ayo’s statement read.

The axe was apparently getting ready to drop on Ayo after the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) Board of Managing Directors recommended to the Board of Trustees that an investigation be made and possible sanctions be meted on Ayo.

Ayo also mentioned that he is going on a “personal retreat” following this astonishing saga that has caused uproar in the national sports community. It has also left the school’s athletic program in disarray with Fr. Jannel Abogado, OP, also resigning from his post as the school’s Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) director.

The Growling Tigers have also lost five different players including standouts CJ Cansino who transferred to the University of the Philippines and prized find Rhenz Abando, who is reportedly heading to Letran.

Also leaving were Brent Paraiso, Ira Battaler and Jun Asuncion.

UST has yet to make a comment after Ayo’s resignation but the head coach expressed his gratitude to the school and the community.

"I thank the UST community for their faith and continued support for the team. I ask for prayers that they, as well as I, may be able to recover from these very trying times," he wrote. (JNP)
