Coronavirus cases rise again

AFTER recording the lowest number of coronavirus infections in a day in almost two months, the Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday, September 8, 2020, reported 3,281 new coronavirus infections.

The new cases Tuesday, which were based on the reports from 81 laboratories, are more than double the 1,383 cases on Monday, which was the lowest since July 15, 2020.

These brought the total case count in the country to 241,987, after the removal of 21 duplicates. Of the total, 52,893 were active cases.

In its case bulletin as of 4 p.m. Tuesday, the DOH also announced 286 additional recoveries from coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), increasing the total to 185,178.

There were additional 26 deaths, raising the death toll to 3,916.

Of the 26 new deaths, 14 occurred in September, eight in August and four in July.

Nine mortalities were from the National Capital Region, four from Central Visayas, three from Calabarzon, two each from Zamboanga Peninsula, Davao and Mimaropa, and one each from Bicol, Western Visayas and Eastern Visayas. One mortality’s location was listed as unknown.

Of the new cases Tuesday, NCR still accounted for the highest number at 1,420, nearly triple the 525 new cases on Monday.

The provinces with the highest numbers were Cavite with 263, Negros Occidental with 204, Laguna with 197 and Rizal with 196.

Of the 52,893 active cases, the proportion of severe and critical cases decreased slightly to 1.3 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively, from 1.4 percent and 2.0 percent on Monday.

Mild cases accounted for 88.6 percent while asymptomatic individuals comprised 8.2 percent of the active cases.

New infections in the last three days were less than 3,000, with the lowest at 1,383 on September 7. The DOH reported 2,529 and 2,839 new cases on September 5 and 6, respectively. (Marites Villamor-Ilano/SunStar Philippines)
