Crime group member dies in shootout

A CRIME syndicate member was killed in a shootout during an intelligence-driven law enforcement operation in the province of Zamboanga del Sur, the police reported Tuesday, September 8.

Police Brigadier General Jesus Cambay Jr. identified the slain crime syndicate member as Hamsa Grandad, who was killed in a shootout around 4:20 p.m. Monday, September 7, following a chase in Purok Roxas in Balongating village, Guipos, Zamboanga del Sur.

Cambay said that Granada is a member of the Anwar Ansang Crime Group, which is involved in gun-for-hire and other atrocities in Guipos and other parts of Zamboanga del Sur province.

Cambay said that Granada, who was sighted driving a motorcycle, sped off toward the town of Dumalinao when policemen conducted an intelligence-driven stop and frisk operation.

Cambay said a shootout ensued after Granada pulled a handgun and opened fire, which prompted the pursuing policemen to return fire, resulting in the death of the suspect.

Recovered from Granada were one caliber .45 pistol loaded with six live ammunition, two empty shells of caliber .45 pistol and 1one fragmentation hand grenade, said Cambay. (SunStar Zamboanga)
