Cuenco: Styling with scrunchies

Messy hair, don't care
Messy hair, don't care

For a time, it was considered a fashion faux pas to wear a scrunchie. But I am not so secretly delighted that the hair accessory of my childhood has made a massive comeback. I first

began to see scrunchies resurfacing last year when the hair accessories trend was booming, but scrunchies are huge for 2020. Here are a few ways to style your hair with scrunchies to put a modern spin on this iconic trend from the ‘90s.

Well rounded

Because of its frilly rounded shape, a scrunchie

is the perfect accent to a bun, whether you choose a low style or pile your hair on top of your head. A great style for staying home or heading out for errands.

Messy hair, don't care

Any accessory will look current, not dated, when it looks more carefree. Scrunch in sea salt spray or curling cream while hair is damp, then air dry naturally or with a fan. Scrunch hair a bit more and pull out a few face-framing pieces after tying on the scrunchie. The styling product will give your hair more grip in case a silk or satin scrunchie keeps slipping down

straight or just-shampooed hair.

Pretty plait

A half French braid tied with a scrunchie is a pretty way to accentuate where the plaited hair ends and the loose hair begins. A French braid may unravel if the scrunchie is too loose, so use a smaller one for this style—or just let it loose if you don’t want to appear too “done” anyway.
