A SUSPECTED member of the New People's Army (NPA) was arrested in a joint military and police operation in the province of Zamboanga del Norte, an official said Monday, September 14.
Lieutenant Colonel Manaros Boransing, commander of the 97th Infantry Battalion, identified the suspect as Lilidan Onto Banugon, 56, a resident of Bato village, Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte.
Boransing said Banugon was arrested in an intelligence-driven joint law enforcement operation around 6:30 p.m. Sunday in Sitio Kalawit in Tinaplan village, Sindangan, Zamboanga Del Norte.
"The arrest of Banugon was a result of joint intelligence effort of our unit and the police, as well and the swift implementation from our ground troops during the arrest," Boransing said.
He said Banugon, a member of the NPA's Western Mindanao Regional Party Committee (WMRPC), has three standing warrants of arrest for murder and attempted murder.
The warrants were issued by the court of Sindangan, Zamboanga del Norte on October 22, 2013 and June 27, 2004, respectively.
Banugon's third warrant of arrest for grave oral defamation, with P4,000 recommended bail, was issued on November 5, 2013 by the court of Sindangan, he added.
Boransing said the suspect is now under the temporary custody of Sindangan Municipal Police Station for commitment to court.
"It shows that we are not just focusing on defeating the communist NPA terrorists but we are also looking for the neutralization of other crime groups and wanted persons in Zamboanga del Norte," he said. (SunStar Zamboanga)
