A self-effacing example

THE gesture of Japan Prime Minister Sjinzo Abe in resigning his post due to poor health is a perfect example of delicadeza which we Filipinos, especially our politicians, sorely lack.

Although Abe has been scored by critics of lack of leadership because of his slow response to the fight against the Covid-19 disease, still he relies on his long service to his country as a backstop for whatever shortcomings he has incurred.

Under his leadership, Japan has maintained its world standing as the third-largest economy after the United States and China.

The discipline and self-restraint of the Japanese people are admired throughout, traits other nationalities, including the Filipinos, do not have!

Delicadeza and honor are valued seriously by the Japanese that they commit seppuku or hara-kiri to avoid shame and embarrassment. Here in the Philippines, our politicians especially are too thick-skinned as to admit any wrongdoings although caught in flagrante delicto.

Such is the great difference between the Japanese people and other nationalities. They bow their heads in respect; the Filipinos cover their faces in shame! Haha.

Abe said: "I have decided that I would step down as prime minister with the belief that I cannot continue being prime minister if I do not have the confidence that I can carry out the job entrusted to me by the people."

Such a noble expression, this. In contract, our politicians think of ways to perpetuate themselves in power. In the same manner, senior officials of Philhealth think of ways to cling to their posts despite anomalous activities attributed to them.

No wonder a smart aleck said politicians suffer from daya-betes and kabid (obviously a play on the words diabetes and covid).

Meanwhile, former Mayor Marino "Boking" Morales disclosed that he would like to be actively a part of the efforts to combat the present Covid crisis.

He hopes that this crisis would end soon so that we could move forward and recover what we've lost to the disease. He said health protocols should be observed faithfully so that we could helo the government.

By the way, his son, IGNACIO "Ike" MIGUEL MORALES, a Bachelor of Arts, major in Political Science graduate from De la Salle University at Taft, Manila has the makings of an erudite politician. He has the built, looks and charisma of his father and is a big political asset. Let us all watch out for IKE!
